Who you will deal with

Twenty years in criminal law, and still the same first question

Jack Leitner has practised criminal law for more than 23 years. He is an Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law, a credential conferred by the Law Society of NSW after assessment of demonstrated specialised competence and held continuously since 2015, and he is the Legal Practice Director of Australian Lawyers and Advocates, the Sydney criminal defence firm he co-founded.

He read criminology alongside law rather than before it. His combined degree paired a Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Criminology, with a Bachelor of Laws, after which he completed the Honours program in Law and the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice.

Where he appears

Jack appears regularly in Local Courts across New South Wales and in the District and Supreme Courts, principally across the Sydney metropolitan region and in other regions of NSW. His practice spans the full range of criminal and traffic matters, from minor matters in the Local Court to serious indictable matters in the District and Supreme Courts. He takes every matter seriously, because every criminal and traffic offence is significant to the person whose licence, job, visa or liberty is at stake.

How he runs a matter

Jack’s view of the solicitor-client relationship is that the client belongs on the legal team rather than on the sidelines of it. That means explaining the charge, explaining the case against you, setting out the realistic range of outcomes, and being clear about the strategy best suited to you and your matter. Advice that only tells a client what they want to hear is not advice, and it tends to cost them at the end when the outcome arrives.

He is approachable in conference and precise in court, and he understands that a criminal charge is rarely a problem confined to the courtroom.
